Opening day dubs
The Renegades hope to continue their good start at 2pm, traveling to Kansas City to play the 0-1 KCKC, while the Cougars take to the road looking to get off the mark in Memphis against the 1-0 Blues.
Dion Holt also deserves a mention, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Little Rock. So too does Mannie Madrigal, who knocked a double and triple, scoring and plating a run for the Cougars.
Deshawn Bennett's 2-out single in the 9th kept the Gades alive and was his second hit of the ballgame. River Compton had been 0-for-3 but his blast put the Gades on top late and he's your Topps Player of the Game.
Rafa McNulty went 7 strong for Little Rock, shipping 4runs on 7 hits with 5 K-balls, but his bullpen let him down. Tran gave up the single to Bennett and the homer to Compton that proved the difference, he takes the L.
So the lines then: today's winning pitcher is Dom Justice, who gives new meaning to long relief, finishing the final 7 frames for the Gades, allowing just 2 runs on 6 hits while fanning 8 and issuing 2 free bases.
The win means the Renegades are 17-3 on Opening Day in their history, including a tremendous accomplishment of 14-1 in their last 15 season-opening games.
It was Compton's 2-run shot that put the Gades in front for good, made possible by Dom Justice's 7 sensational innings of relief when Roman Gilmore was rocked early.
A comeback of comebacks, down 5-0 after 3 innings, the Renegades rally for 6 of their own and take the W on opening day!
