Congratulations, THE DUKES!

Nov 25th 2019 By Los Angeles Lions

The Atlanta THE DUKES are the Season 79 World Champions!!! An impressive 48-12 record wasn’t enough for them to win their division, but they didn’t let that adversity stop them...they took the #1 seed in the wildcard and flew past everyone thanks to some great, consistent offense. They defeated the Louisville Colonels, 8-5, the Springfield Royals, 9-8, and the St. Louis Birds on a Bat, 9-8 to make the World Playoffs.

Their division foe, the Newark Boxers, beat them to the first-round bye, but they got a favorable matchup against the #186-ranked ArthurImirm. The game was closer than many expected, but the DUKES managed to escape with a 9-8 win (their third straight 9-8 win!!) In the world quarterfinals, they did get the bye, and they watched as the Cleveland Indians continued their Cinderella run to defeat their rivals, the Newark Boxers, and the Kure Kantai claimed their spot in the World Series by defeating the Mayaguez PRnacionals, 11-10, in an absolute thriller of a game.

In the world semifinals, it was David vs Goliath as the 48-12 DUKES faced the 37-13 Indians. Both teams had made very impressive runs up to this point, but one had to end here. Whose would it be?

As it turns out, the clock struck midnight on the Indians, as the DUKES defeated them, 8-6, to earn their place in the World Series against the Kantai. The stage was set. One team would be getting their first ever World Title this season, and no matter who it is, you can’t say they don’t deserve it.

In the first game of the Series, the DUKES forced Kantai pitcher Ames out of the game in the 3rd inning, and demolished their bullpen in a very impressive 16-6 thrashing. Their offense was simply way too much for the Kantai, and it looked like the Series could be over in 2 games.

But the Kantai refused to give up, and they managed a very impressive 5-1 victory in Game 2, and, as the first team to shut down the DUKES’ offense in the playoffs, the Kantai had to be feeling good about their chances in game 3.

Game 3 lived up to all of the hype, as the game was 4-3 Kantai heading into the 8th inning. The Kantai scored again to make it 5-3, but in the bottom of the 8th, the DUKES put up 5 runs, as Kantai pitcher Maureo Arce was undoubtedly running out of steam. Suddenly, it was 8-5 DUKES, and the Kantai had only one more inning to come back. Could they do it??

Almost.

The Kantai put up 2 runs, but could do no more, as they fell agonizingly short in the final inning, losing 7-8 to the DUKES. It was a great game and a great series, and a huge congratulations goes out to both teams for their playoff runs, and especially to the DUKES for their first World Series title!!

Good luck to everyone in bidding and in Season 80!
